Oh, matzo… the unfortunate household staple for chametz-craving Jews everywhere. Now, I usually avoid this tasteless cardboard at all costs (Except when it’s dipped in chocolate. Everything’s better when dipped in chocolate. Everything.), but I received a disturbing call from Adam last night:

“I’ll eat with you tonight, but under one condition…I cook dinner.”

I fell out of my chair. I checked my pulse. I pinched myself. This was not a dream.

To give a little background, I’d say Adam cooks two things fairly well: Cinnamon Toast and Pop Tarts. To hear that he wanted to “cook dinner” for me is the equivalent of Oprah calling me up and shouting, “YOU get a car!!”…

Life has been a bit hectic in Savvyland, but never too hectic to stop in at my new favorite French pastry shop in Chelsea. Now, if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m serious about my pastries… very serious. Don’t give me that rubbery, preservative-filled Starbucks excuse for a croissant, and don’t even think about the pre-packaged, mass-manufactured, cloyingly sweet thing you call a “danish”. No. Give me the real stuff and give it to me straight. If I’m gonna murder myself to tears at the gym all week, it better be for a damn good reason.

My friends, the monstrously large, expertly crafted, freshly baked almond croissant at Madeleine Patisserie is one damn good reason…

Ah, St. Patty’s day… the one day out of the year it’s perfectly acceptable to stumble through the city streets in a drunken stupor. Well, if you leave out Halloween. And New Years Eve. And Mardi Gras. And most weekends… Okay, fine, so New Yorkers like to get their drink on. But me? I have a term paper to write and projects to begin. I better stick to the other thing the Irish do best besides river dancing: potatoes!

After a gourmet food truck dry spell, Wafels & Dinges has finally decided to hit up the Columbus Circle lunch hour. And lucky for me, there was no line! For those who aren’t familiar, Wafels & Dinges is a gourmet Belgian wafel truck that serves up two varieties of wafel and a zillion different dinges.

Wafel = Waffle
Dinges = Sh*t you put on your waffle

Like you needed another reason to move to NYC…

What’s better than Kashkaval at Kashkaval? Kashkaval at home, in my sweatpants, as I mindlessly tab through Reddit. Oh, yes.

If you’ve somehow forgotten my favorite restaurant ever, here’s my first gushing post about it. In short, Kashkaval is an adorable Hell’s Kitchen cheese shop that opens up into a wonderfully romantic (and affordable!) Mediterranean tapas and wine bar. And although I always knew this place sold their tapas by the pound, I somehow believed that bringing the lovely spreads outside the shop would make the dining-in experience less… special? Whatever. I had a serious craving for Beet Skordalia and warm pita yesterday, and I needed it satiated ASAP…

Angelica Kitchen is, and has always been, my favorite vegan restaurant in the city. There’s something to be said about a place that guarantees all ingredients are local and most are served within 48 hours of harvest. The restaurant’s deep compassion for the environment and natural food are reflected in their wildly creative seasonal menus – from lime-roasted tempeh to barbequed seitan sandwiches, it’s always fun to check out their daily dishes. It’s also fun to bring a steak-lovin’, rib-suckin’, finger-lickin’ carnivore along for the ride...

I took out some surprisingly good veggie sushi yesterday from the Mecca that is Whole Foods Columbus Circle. With an empty stomach and some time to spare, you could get seriously intentionally lost in this place. I tell you this because I have. From their sit-down sushi bar to endless sample tables, I’m like a kid in the candy store section of Whole Foods.

My $6 dinner came from the daily packaged sushi counter. The miso-vinegar sauce initially drew me to this roll, and the price sealed the deal; their fish sushi can get all sorts of expensive.

Sushi in hand, I walked over to the Express Line… only it was swamped. So, I did my super secret Ninja Whole Foods Trick of checking out at the café counter. Yup! As long as you buy a drink from the barista, they’ll happily check you out. You’re welcome.

Carrots, spinach and avocado wrapped in seaweed and brown rice… can’t tell me that ain’t healthy! The miso dipping sauce was thick, creamy and way lower in sodium than the usual soy sauce. Not to mention, it was all pretty filling. 9 pieces and I was full for the night…
