THE SAVVY SOYBEAN

Each time I move about the city (or “change shells,” as I refer to it… which, by the way, has become a near yearly thing), there is very serious work to be done. No, it’s not finding the right furniture or hanging the perfect paintings or meeting the neighbors or making sure the cable works or any of those very necessary things… it is far more vital. Yes. The great search for my new go-to Indian place begins.

This time, however, we hit the naan right on the head. (Hah! I crack myself up.) The search began and ended with Aangan: arguably the best Indian on the Upper West Side, and possibly the best Indian I’ve had in NYC...

UPDATE: It's a sad, sad day in the Italindian community. Bombay Eats has lost their lease and is no longer open for business. It's rumored to be replaced with a Ramen shop (because we totally need more of those), but it hasn't been confirmed. We'll keep you informed!

No, it’s not a pizza-like Uttapam. It’s a slice of regular Italian pizza… with Indian toppings. This is happening.

I first noticed the Indian Pizza at Bombay Eats (52nd btwn 8th & 9th) a few weeks ago, but alas, it was closing time. I did have a chance to peer into the place, which surprisingly looked like an ordinary pizza joint. I left it alone and went on my way… but it wasn’t long till I was once again faced with this delicious anomaly…

My Jewish grandmother would be proud. After sampling a myriad of South Asian fare, I finally discovered the Indian take on what is essentially a latke shoved inside a blintz: the Masala Dosa...

Aaheli > Minar? 01/05/2010

Oh, it’s good to be back in the big city! And what’s better than kicking off my return to the epicenter of America with some good ol’ authentic Indian food? Now, I’ve been a bit disgruntled ever since I moved out of Chelsea. My go-to Indian delivery, Minar, is blocks away and I haven’t had the time to experiment with Indian in Hell’s Kitchen… until now.

Aaheli, smooshed between storefronts on 9th btwn 54th and 55th, is ridiculously good. Not only are the prices extremely reasonable, but the North and South Indian cuisine is perfectly authentic with a ton of veggie options. Not to mention, their $9.95 lunch buffet is probably the best deal in the city...

Though I’ve never set foot in Minar (apparently on 31st btwn 5th & bway), I deem it the cheapest, tastiest, most satisfying Indian restaurant in midtown. How is this possible? A New Yorker’s favorite activity: ordering in. There’s nothing more thrilling than the shrill ringing of the buzzer and the hand-delivery of food to my doorstep. That being said, dining out is a wonderful experience in the city and shouldn’t be missed for those spending a few nights. But for regular New Yorkers dealing with these disgusting weather conditions day in and day out, a domestic meal isn’t such a bad idea.

My quest for quick, reliable Indian delivery commenced in early 2008. I began with Bombay Garden- a bland, tasteless excuse for authentic Indian cuisine. I pressed on to Swagat. They had their good days and had their overly spiced, sluggishly slow delivery days- but consistently good naan. I was troubled. Should I keep with the gamble that is Swagat delivery or should I venture out into new Indian culinary domain? I chose the latter… and so glad I did. Minar has been my go-to Indian delivery for the past two years. Incredibly cheap and always flavorful, Minar delivery is a lazy vegetarian’s dream...
