THE SAVVY SOYBEAN

A few stormy nights ago (there have been quite a few lately), Adam and I decided we would order in some pizza. Now as a couple living in New York City, we rarely associate “delivery” with “pizza”. Greek, Thai, Indian, Mexican, Japanese… if it’s within a ~20 block radius, it’s ours. So when I suggested the novel concept of actually having a large pizza in a box delivered directly to our apartment, we were excited.

We were especially psyched because we realized that one of our favorite pizza-by-the-slice shops, Two Boots, delivers to our ‘hood. Founded by two indie filmmakers who love Italian and Creole food, this shop combines the two flavors to make awesome pizzas. Oh and Louisiana is shaped like a boot, Italy is shaped like a boot. Two Boots. There ya go...

Oh, Keste Pizza & Vino… you really could care less about my waistline. Bubbly, crusty, cheesy, piping hot handmade personal pizzas for cheap… have you no shame, sir? Have you no shame?

I first discovered Keste by suggestion of my friend Iryna, a self-proclaimed (and Savvy-confirmed) foodie and knower-of-all-things-delicious. She described the myriad toppings and thick, hearty crust. She described the vibrant West Village location and unbelievable smell emanating from Bleecker Street.

Really, she had me at “pizza.” So on I went to the multiple award-winning, mouth-watering restaurant. And of all the strange vegan and exotic non-meaty places to which I drag my boyfriend, he was happy to accompany me on this one.

The place was packed with families, young couples and the ever-present NYU crowd, sipping wine and enjoying the famed main course. Accolades lined the walls; a sure token of a restaurant well-visited, and Keste’s intimate dining area gave way to an open kitchen, complete with an assembly table and brick oven...

UPDATE: It's a sad, sad day in the Italindian community. Bombay Eats has lost their lease and is no longer open for business. It's rumored to be replaced with a Ramen shop (because we totally need more of those), but it hasn't been confirmed. We'll keep you informed!

No, it’s not a pizza-like Uttapam. It’s a slice of regular Italian pizza… with Indian toppings. This is happening.

I first noticed the Indian Pizza at Bombay Eats (52nd btwn 8th & 9th) a few weeks ago, but alas, it was closing time. I did have a chance to peer into the place, which surprisingly looked like an ordinary pizza joint. I left it alone and went on my way… but it wasn’t long till I was once again faced with this delicious anomaly…

UPDATE 12/20/10: Yeah, it closed. I'm shocked. I'll shed a few tears later...
It's pizza! It's a cone! It's Pizzacone! Squeezed into a narrow take-out shop on 5th between 32nd and 33rd, K! Pizzacone is open for business as of Monday the 22nd. With the whole portable pizza concept being wildly popular throughout Europe, owner Ingo Pinto figured it was time to take a bite out of the Big Apple… and then smother it in cheese and shove it in a cone.

You can check out a detailed review here on Serious Eats: Slice. Why won’t I be coning-it-up, you might ask? Starting at $4.90 a pop, this novelty (yes, novelty) snack is a bit too steep for Savvy. It also reminds me of the dreadful Hotpocket. Still, if I someday magically find myself in line for this crazy concoction, I wouldn't be entirely upset...

Rule of thumb: If a dish is included in the restaurant’s name, it's probably done right. Introducing Lasagna Ristorante on 20th & 8th, in the heart of Chelsea. With more locations on the East Side and Hell’s Kitchen, this little Italian hotspot is booming with business all over Manhattan - and it’s a good thing, too! They serve up 17- count e’m- 17 variations on lasagna, including a “create your own” option.

But not to worry, fellow veggie-lovers: 8 out of the 17 lasagnas are vegetarian! From artichoke hearts with capers to garlicky eggplant, there’s no lack of creativity when it comes to the title dish. It won’t put a hole in your wallet, either. Their gigantic original lasagna costs only $13 bucks… and I bet you can’t finish it.
