Mmm Wallabies... 02/20/2010

I have a new favorite yogurt. This is a big deal. Wallaby Organic “Australian Style” is the smoothest, tastiest eco-friendly yogurt I’ve tried. And just for the record, it’s not made from wallaby milk… although that would be interesting.

The brand caught my eye today during a weekly stock-up at Westerly Natural Market. Usually priced at $1.39, it was on sale for .99. It also had a wallaby on it. This was all the convincing I needed. Taking advantage of the sale, I piled up on Lowfat Raspberry, Vanilla Bean, and Black Cherry (though the Dulce De Leche and Vanilla-Banana looked particularly fantastic)...

But it was delicious. Yes, friends, I ate a hippo… a chocolate hazelnut cream-filled Happy Hippo, to be exact. It caught my attention this past Sunday at m2m, a Korean grocer on the Upper West Side. The hippo just… looked so darn happy. As I stared into its searching eyes, memories emerged of the Hungry Hungry Hippo game I would so enthusiastically play as a child. What fun we had, those hippos and I. Yet, something was oddly dissatisfying about that game. Why’d the hippos get to have all the fun? I was hungry, too, you know. Maybe if I purchased this box… this one box of chocolate cream-filled hippos, I would fill the hungry hungry void in my hungry hungry heart…

Ever get in the mood? You know, the one where all you want is just a bite of this and maybe a nibble of that? A cookie, a chip, a handful of crackers…and before you know it, you’ve polished off a 500 calorie meal?! Well, stop it, already.

I’ve found the perfect solution to the snacking crisis. They’re nutty, crunchy, super satisfying- and get this: they’re one of the healthiest foods around. Yup, I’m talking about raw sprouts. Dense with enzymes, fiber and Vitamin C, sprouts are the perfect solution to that nibbly snacking mood we can’t quite shake…

I haven’t given much thought to product reviews on The Savvy Soybean- I quite enjoy supporting mom n’ pop shops and getting the word out there about their homemade foods and much deserved success - but it recently dawned on me that the big, wealthy food companies had to start from somewhere, too. Perhaps it was in a small cottage in Southampton, home to the original Tate’s Bake Shop. Or maybe it was a professor of Asian philosophy who had big dreams and a passion for soybeans. It sounds strange, but that’s exactly how Ted Nordquist, founder of WholeSoy & Co., began his environmentally conscious, organic soy yogurt enterprise. WholeSoy & Co.'s fascinating history can be found here on their site. A moral company, steadfast to its core beliefs… now that’s a “man” whose product is worth blogging about...
