Sweet, smoky veggies with tangy goat cheese on a crunchy baguette… probably my favorite combo ever. A charcoal grill always brings out vegetables’ depth of flavor, while texturally, you get everything- smooth, creamy, crunchy… all served with a heaping side of fries. Well, at least that’s how it’s made at Toast on 125th and Broadway.
A self-proclaimed “truckstop gourmet” restaurant, Toast delivers homemade fare in a relaxed, super casual setting. And if you’re wary about trekking it up to Harlem, not to worry. There’s another more spacious spot 20 blocks down Broadway on 105th...

From hand-cut french-fries to grilled sharp cheddar and spinach sandwiches, it’s all the comfort you’ll need without spending a fortune. Their draft selection is nothing to cough at, either. Harpoon IPA, Smuttynose, and my favorite Original Sin Hard Cider (girly, I know) are all about $6 a pop. The restaurant has a small, intimate bar counter and a few televisions, usually airing college sports and what not. Though the place has a bar-food mentality, the atmosphere is surprisingly calming. Dim lights and tea candles make for a sweet dinner with the boyfriend, while larger tables cater to a guy’s night out to watch the big game. I’ve also seen quite a few young families here, with the kids happily munching on mac n’ cheese or French toast with strawberry butter. That’s right- there’s no time constraints on Toast's breakfast menu.
I most recently ordered that grilled veggie goat cheese sandwich I was raving about for just $8.95. It comes with fries, but I opted for a side salad. If you’d like an explanation as to why, please click here, here and here.
The sizable baguette was crunchy and soaked up all the grilled veggie goodness. There were chunks of meaty Portobello, zucchini, sweet red peppers, and a few sun-dried tomatoes for that extra “zing.” The goat cheese was fresh, tart, and of just the right amount. I also liked that the leafy salad wasn’t drenched in sugary dressing- just a conservative sprinkling of oil and vinegar. Of the many goat cheese and veggie sandwiches I’ve had, Toast’s definitely holds its own.
Adam, on the other hand, got the steak sandwich au jus. I think he buys these things just to be certain I won’t steal a bite.
If you’re in the area and hungry for some well-prepared American grub, go to Toast. It’s tasty, affordable, and has a darn good goat cheese and veggie sandwich. Bon Appetit on the Upper West Side!
