Mmm Wallabies... 02/20/2010
I have a new favorite yogurt. This is a big deal. Wallaby Organic “Australian Style” is the smoothest, tastiest eco-friendly yogurt I’ve tried. And just for the record, it’s not made from wallaby milk… although that would be interesting. The brand caught my eye today during a weekly stock-up at Westerly Natural Market. Usually priced at $1.39, it was on sale for .99. It also had a wallaby on it. This was all the convincing I needed. Taking advantage of the sale, I piled up on Lowfat Raspberry, Vanilla Bean, and Black Cherry (though the Dulce De Leche and Vanilla-Banana looked particularly fantastic)... So, what is “Australian Style” you may ask? It’s all about the slow cooking. Most American yogurt companies use not-so-veggie-savvy gelatin to quickly thicken up their yogurts. Australians use a slow cooking process to achieve a naturally smooth texture that's very similar to the consistency of drinkable yogurt. The culturing process makes for a milder flavor, too. And although Aussies inspired the yogurt, Wallaby Company is based in Napa County, CA and works in conjunction with local family dairy farmers to produce organic milk from pasture-fed cows. On to the taste test: I had the Lowfat Vanilla Bean this morning. It was chock-full of dark, aromatic vanilla beans, and the flavor was mild and lovely. The texture was smooth and thinner than most yogurts, but just a tad creamier than the drinkable variety. It was also pretty guilt-free: just five simple, certified organic ingredients and 150 calories. I like that I’m not ingesting all those artificial flavors, antibiotics and dreadful Aspartame found in factory-farmed yogurts, and I love that Wallaby respects animals and refuses to cut corners. G’day, mate! CommentsMarlark 02/20/2010 4:22pm
Sounds marSUPER. Can't wait to bounce to my nearest organic grocer. Stephen Schwelp 02/20/2010 4:27pm
Wallabies are always so environmentally conscious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyZbw8waVwk. Hey Savvy! Thank you so much for your lovely comment on my blog - interestingly I recently found a (vintage Moulinex) yoghurt maker and about to try it with soy milk, will add it to my blog if it works. Love your blog and will definitely be checking in regularly too. Have a great day! Leave a Reply |
