GETE's Whiskey-Maple Sour Cream Apple Pie 02/24/2010
Need I say more? Oh, I will anyway… I happily revisited Good Enough To Eat last night, my go-to UWS spot for veg-friendly American home cookin’ (full restaurant review here). It was excellent weather for this sort of food – rain, plummeting temperature, overall yuckiness… a warm brioche roll, a filling entrée and excellent company seemed to be the cure-all. As anticipated, dinner was delicious, chitchat was delightful, and bizarre cow décor was in full effect … but the one regret I’ve always had when leaving GETE was being too darn stuffed for their homemade deserts. There they sat: sweet potato pie, strawberry shortcake, pear-walnut tart… quietly taunting me as I entered and exited the shop. I’ll get you next time! I’d vow through clenched teeth. Well, this time was “next time” and I came prepared. With a precious corner of foodspace reserved for a sweet treat, I raced to the dessert counter, pressed my nose against the glass and began to salivate… “This one. Describe this one to me.” “Ooh, this one’s our apple crumb pie made with fresh sour cream, Canadian Maple syrup, a touch of Whiskey, and some delici-” “I’ll take it. That table over there. Three forks. Now.” Okay, maybe I was a bit more polite than that... but that’s pretty much the gist of it. Before I could say “OMFG-there’s-whiskey-in-the-pie,” a colossal portion was on our table, ready to devour. For quality ingredients, home-baked attention and generous portions, $7 for a slice split three ways was a pretty savvy deal. The pie was outstanding. Thick, baked cinnamon-y apple slices covered with caramelized whiskey and a hint of maple syrup made for a mildly sweet taste with a bittersweet finish. The crust was flakey and buttery thanks to the sour cream, and there was a sort of strudel crumble throughout. The softer parts of the crust tasted exactly like French toast, most likely from the maple syrup and brown sugar. The only way to improve upon this masterpiece would have been a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream… but we'll save that for another time. Besides, I pretty much met my calorie quota for the month with this thing. Yes, I’d say the Whiskey-Maple Sour Cream Apple Pie is “good enough to eat”…and then eat again… and again… and again… CommentsThis looks SOO YUMMY!! Just this pie alone makes me want to be back in NYC! I love your blog, you make me miss the great NYC.
