THE SAVVY SOYBEAN

Ah, St. Patty’s day… the one day out of the year it’s perfectly acceptable to stumble through the city streets in a drunken stupor. Well, if you leave out Halloween. And New Years Eve. And Mardi Gras. And most weekends… Okay, fine, so New Yorkers like to get their drink on. But me? I have a term paper to write and projects to begin. I better stick to the other thing the Irish do best besides river dancing: potatoes!

Yeah, these potatoes are in fry-form and bear a French name… so what? They’re potatoes. I’m trying, here.

This cone of fried goodness comes from Pommes Frites, a rustic Belgian shop on 2nd near 6th street in the East Village. Boxes and boxes of potatoes line the cramped store, and for good reason… they need ‘em! Within seconds of entering the shop, the line tripled. To create the pommes frites, potatoes are peeled, sliced thick and double-fried for that golden crunch. They’re then served in a gigantic cone and topped with one of their crazy-good sauces. From Smoked Eggplant Mayo to Irish Curry (see? I am being festive!) their dipping selection is mind-blowing. It’s only $1 on top of the Regular Frites price ($4.50) for their special sauce, or you could stick with one of their free sauces.

My friend and I were feeling particularly frugal and went with their traditional and free  “Frites Sauce”, which is European Mayo. It’s a bit denser and more citrus-y than what we’re used to, which is a nice variation. I dipped one piping hot fry into the sauce and I almost booked a flight to Belgium right then and there. Seriously, Belgium? Pommes Frites and Wafels & Dinges? How you taunt me so.

The fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were so good, they didn’t even require the dipping sauce! But for next time, I’m eyeing the Vietnamese Pineapple Mayo and Peanut Satay.

PS: if you’re planning on drinking yourself silly tonight, I’d stroll on over to McSorley’s Old Ale House right next to Pommes Frites. Established in 1854, they’re the oldest pub in Manhattan and serve up their very own, very tasty pints.

What are your St. Patty’s Day plans? Or to ask a more relevant question, what’s your favorite hangover cure?

Next time, get the mango chutney mayo dip, to die for!! Nice and sweet. This place is one of my faves. I'm in Brooklyn, so I don't come too often, but when I'm in the neighborhood, I go here.
