THE SAVVY SOYBEAN

I'm alive! The semester's over, the birds are singing, and the sun is shining. Gone are the sleepless nights and shouting expletives at my laptop. This newfound freedom can mean one thing, and one thing only: It's Kyotofu soft serve time.

Now, when I think "soymilk," the terms "chalky" and "weird aftertaste" usually follow. I shy away from store-bought soy ice cream, as it's expensive and tastes weird. With that, I can honestly write that Kyotofu's soymilk ice cream is some sort of miracle. It tastes dairy. In fact, I'll go so far as to say it tastes better than dairy.
Creamy, flavorful and with no aftertaste, Kyotofu makes the meanest dairy-free soft serve around. The flavors change weekly, with everything from Chocolate Espresso to Black Sesame. And for a mere $3.85, you get a "small" cup (it's huge) and one of six toppings.

This past week, they were serving up Chocolate Almond and French Vanilla Bean. I spent about three minutes deciding which one I wanted, became frazzled, and ordered a twist of both. I'm a wonderful compromiser.

They topped my twist with fresh fruit (yet another difficult decision) and I dug right in. The Chocolate Almond was rich and chocolatey, with only a subtle hint of almond. And although I wouldn't exactly call it "French" vanilla (which is more of a frozen egg custard, apparent from its signature yellow coloring), it was still delicious and super creamy. And if you're not full after that, order one of their famous (Seriously! It's famous!) Chocolate Soufflé Cupcakes to go.

It's officially summertime! What's your favorite warm-weather treat?

This looks delish. The fruit look like rubies! Now I'm hungry.

My favorite warm dessert is cake, microwaved cake. My favorite weathered dessert is cake, left in the desert wind for a century. My favorite warm-weathered dessert is cake... delicious cakular cake.

Ooh, I wonder what their method is for making it so good? Also, if that's their "small" serve, then they're my kinda place :)
