THE SAVVY SOYBEAN

Savvy’s back! And with my grand return come new reviews, new recipes, and brand new digs. That’s right, kids: I’ve moved on up to the Upper West Side. Oh, it feels fabulous… the peace, the quiet, the anti-midtown-ness of it all… And with my move complete and Ikea hajj accomplished, there’s just one thing left to do in this strange new town: Eat. Everything.

Buckle (or rather, unbuckle) your seatbelts: We’re kicking off Uptown blogging with the best of the best and the tastiest of the tastiest. I am, of course, speaking of the greatest cookie I’ve ever devoured in my two decades of life on this planet: the chocolate chip walnut cookie at Levain Bakery...

How I’ve survived without this place, I do not know. In a tiny shop on 74th at Amsterdam lives a 6 oz cookie that’ll be sure to ruin your appetite (for any other cookie ever again). Superficially, it’s browned, buttery and crisp, while the inside is a full-on party of hardly baked, chunky chocolate nutty goodness. It is also the size of a young child’s head. It is also 400+ calories. It is also the greatest cookie you’ll ever eat. I could go on, but I’d just be kvelling for 8 more paragraphs. Weighing in at $4 a pop, think of this cookie as not a cookie, but a full-on meal/ transporting experience. It’s well worth it.

Cheers to much more Upper West Side dining!

Visiting from SITS. Oh my I have to say that is a pretty cookie, and well worth the $4 and 400 calories!

Oh, Savvy, how I've missed your laugh-out-loud and insightful posts. Yes, even Bobby Flay had to say, "Best. Cookie. Ever." I've tried the rest and, veyismere, Levain is the best.

Janet: This monster of a cookie ain't vegan! Though I do follow a primarily dairy-free diet, there are some things definitely worth going lacto-veg for!!

As soon as I saw the first photo, I thought of Levain Bakery, and low and behold, I read that it was indeed from there. Their cookies are truly something special.
