THE SAVVY SOYBEAN

Hello again! It’s been a little while since my last post, but have no fear! I have since chowed down on some serious NYC grub…all for the sake of the blog, of course. So let’s get back in the groove with my favorite meal in the known universe: BRUNCH.

I’ve been excited to check out Popover Café (86th & Amsterdam Ave.) since I moved up here in the summer. I’ve heard some great things from friends about their flakey, eggy popovers and some not so great things about the line that forms on Sunday afternoons. So when my mother stopped into the city to have some girl time (yay) at the 79th street flea market, we made sure to get to brunch early. Adam also met up with us for the brunch portion of our day, because, as I say every weekend here in NYC, who can resist brunch?! No one. That’s who.

behold: the mighty popover!
The Popover vibe is relaxed and intimate, and the space is sectioned into three rooms. Luckily, the menu has great veggie selections. There’s everything from coconut-almond crusted challah French toast to every omelette combo under the sun. I settled on the “French Flopover,” ($12) which I can best describe as a flourless crepe. The fillings included brie, roasted pears and scallions. Though it also came with ham, I switched it out for some sautéed spinach. Leave it to me to customize everywhere I go. My mom ordered the sweeter original Flopover ($11) with sautéed apples, pears and currants topped with cinnamon-sugar and sour cream and Adam ordered a cranberry, cheddar and bacon omelette ($12). He does this so I won’t take a bite.

But first: the popover ($2.75)! It was huge, piping hot, and served with strawberry butter. Oh yes. Adam’s omelette actually came with one as well. Although the outside was nothing exciting, once cracked open, the innards were nothing but steamy, doughy goodness. And FYI, one of these is plenty for two people. Seriously. It’s the size of your head.

As for the Popover Flopover, it was super filling and delicious. The standout ingredient in here was the roasted pear, which added the perfect amount of sweetness and crunch. Adam and my mom seemed to enjoy their dishes, as there was nothing left after 15 minutes. And oh was it affordable for the UWS! At around $10 per person, I’d say it’s a savvy brunch indeed.

That pop-up popped out the web page! And I pleased to see that someone in your photo has the brunch etiquette to eat their omelet with a knife an fork. Another great review, Savvy. Can't wait to pop-in.
