IN A BREATH:
The findings of a frugal 20-something on the hunt for awesome veggie cuisine in the heart of Manhattan
IN A BIGGER BREATH:
The Savvy Soybean was born from the laptop of Samantha Siegel in the winter of 2009 when the question was posed: “What do you Vegetarians eat in Manhattan, anyway?” Well Urbanites, rest assured it’s a heck of a lot. You certainly won’t find sad, soggy salads or mushy tofu dishes on this site. From third generation pastry shops to restaurant menus comprised entirely of lasagna, there’s no lack of versatility when it comes to affordable meat-free eats in the Big Apple. Vegetarianism here isn’t a hindrance but a culinary adventure… and for a New Yorker on a budget, it’s also a tasty challenge.
My goal within this blog is to share my favorite city finds without spending a fortune. A girl’s gotta eat, and who says she can’t eat like a queen? With so many great deals and hole-in-the-wall treasures, it’s impossible for a savvy girl to starve in the vegetarian Mecca that is Manhattan. I’ll also share delicious, simple recipes I’ve picked up for when you’re in the mood to cozy up and eat in. Finally, I must make it known that I have a deep affinity for empty carbs (breads, cakes and the like) so a good number of posts are dedicated to these things.
BUT SURELY YOU DO OTHER THINGS BESIDES EATING...?
Why yes! While stuffing my face and documenting it occurs about three times daily, I'm also a junior art director at KBS+P. I also enjoy skiing, though I've done it only once but was told I was pretty good at it.
FINALLY, IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU:
You, the fabulously frugal food enthusiast, are the reason The Savvy Soybean exists. I’ve lived in this city just four short years and I’m still hungry! So if you discover something great, please let me know and I’ll be sure to check it out. I’m wide open for suggestions on all counts.
